Last week, composer Nico Muhly joined indie-rock friends Thomas Bartlett and Sam Amidon to present a concert that got reviewed in the The New York Times.
This missed connection?
BCE has done Muhly’s work before: I Cannot Attain Unto It (2005). His piece certainly has echoes of the Jennefelt style we’ll perform in the fall (e.g., repeated non-word syllables establishing mood and providing rhythmic direction in a minimalist style). It sounds like Muhly’s recent performance was in a similar vein. As the Times critic described it, “Mr. Muhly’s appealing instrumental compositions drew on Philip Glass’s harmonic stasis and the rhythmic vitality of Stravinsky and Ligeti, mixed with a flair for electronic counterpoint that was all Mr. Muhly’s own.”
